Worth the Splurge | Top 3 Highend/Luxury Mascaras

Perfect lashes in the blink of an eye?
Is it worth it to spend a little fortune on mascara or are the drugstore versions just as good?

As you probably know, I like to spend a little more if the quality really convinces me. When it comes to mascara I had (and actually still have) lots of favorites from the drugstore which is why I wasn’t even looking at highend mascaras for a really long time.  I failed to see why I should spend such a big amount of money on mascara.
But that was before I discovered the three mascaras I want to introduce to you right now.
In my opinion there are no other mascaras that compare to these three.

The following mascaras made it into my Top 3:
Chanel le volume de chanel, YSL Babydoll und Guerlain MaxiLash So Volume. I love each of them for different reasons.

In Switzerland all of them are available directly on Parfumcity.ch.

Chanel le volume de chanel- ultimate volume

The packaging is – typically Chanel – very classy and simple. It is completely black which makes the white Chanel lettering pop. I personally like the packaging a lot – it feels and looks very luxurious.

The secret of this mascara definitely lies in its innovative brush. The bristles on the brush are described as snowflakes. I actually don’t really recognize the form of a snowflake but the brush and its bristles is definitely very unique and I haven’t found a similar brush so far.

The rubber brush is pretty big but still easy to use. Only the lower lashes are a little trickier to reach, you have to be a little more carful there.

Especially right after opening up a new bottle it is pretty runny and also the mascara wiper doesnt take off a lot of product which leads to quite a lot of product on the brush.
My Tipp: Pull out the brush as slowly as possible – that way as much product as possible will be kept inside the tube and the application will be a lot easier.

What Chanel promises:

This innovative, high-precision mascara achieves instant volume and intense colour in a single stroke for longer, thicker-looking lashes.

Natural waxes deliver instant volume while rapid-drying acacia gum sets and intensifies the curl. Film-forming agents preserve suppleness and help build volume evenly. A Chanel-exclusive ‘Snowflakes’ brush combines long and short bristles for an extreme, eye-opening effect.

Sounds really promising doesn’t it? Well that’s what marketing is for – so let’s have a look a some real-life results!

The le volume is my favorite everyday mascara as it creates really intense volume and deep black lashes after just one coat. Besides that it reaches even the tiniest of lashes directly on the roots creating a tightlining effect. The lashes look volumized in the blink of an eye without any clumping. It separates the lashes beautifully. And the best part – these amazing results hold up the whole day without losing any of its intensity.

The brush picks up quite a lot of products every time you go in, which is why one coat is absolutely sufficient (at least in my case). More than two coats rather destroy the perfect effect you immediately get.

Length & Curl

I also adore the length I get with this mascara. One coat is enough to get a recognizable difference.  However I have another mascara in my Top 3 that lenghtens them even more.

It also adds a beautiful curl to my lashes using only one coat. Unfortunately that curl doesn’t last on my lashes during the whole day though. But to be fair – only very few non-waterproof mascaras are able to do so on my lashes.

The Chanel le volume mascara ist my favorite mascara when I’m in a hurry but still want to see a remarkable difference in my lashes. I own no other mascara that achieves this volume with only one coat. I think the before and after photos speak for themselves.

In addition it lasts the whole day without any problems and still is really easy to remove.

The le volume has been a favorite of mine for years now which is why I used it daily for a very long time. Since I only use one coat for the desired effect I was able to use it for over 4 months without it drying out. I can’t say that about any of the drugstore mascaras I own, which puts the price into perspective.

If you are looking for an intense effect without clumping you will absolutely love this mascara.

Yves Saint Laurent Babydoll – ultimate length and definition

The packaging is – like most of the YSL products – completely gold. The packaging feels really high-quality and it is an absolute eye-catcher.

The rubber brush is pretty small so it is really easy to reach even the small lashes and also the lower ones. In addition the brush is very flexible, which makes it extremely easy to use and it adjusts to every eye shape.

The mascara wiper takes off quite a lot of product which leads to never having too much product on the brush. The formula is also rather dry so you can easily take your time and work in separate coats without clumping. On the other hand it will take a little longer to get to the desired effect.

What YSL promises:

A unique mascara with a patented formula that provides defined volume, lash-by-lash separation, and up-to-24-hour wear.

Baby Doll creates a full open-eye effect by lifting and separating lashes. The patented formula creates long-lasting volume and intense color that is evenly dispersed with no flakes, clumps, or smudges for up to 24 hours. Reach every lash, including the baby ones for a full fringe effect. The brush has duo-length bristles that adapt to all lash types, separating, coating, and multiplying lashes for defined volume.

Let’s have a look at some real life results!

The applicator of the Baby Doll separates the lashes beautifully creating remarkable volume. It reaches the lashes directly at the base and darkens the roots. Since the brush is quite small it is easy to reach even the small lashes without getting any product on the lid.

Length & Curl

This mascara is crazy good at lengthening my lashes! I get maximized lashes that almost reach my eyebrows in no time. The lashes also look extremely long because of the intense curl this mascara creates – almost as if you use a lash curler.

I own no other mascara that creates better lower lashes than this one! Look at them – even those lashes look extremely long and perfectly separated.

As I mentioned before I absolutely adore the length and definition this mascara creates. It isn’t able to give me the same amount of volume as the Chanel one does but it definitely elongates them a lot better.

One thing is for sure – its my favorite mascara to use on my lower lashes, it makes them look phenomenal!

  • available on Parfumcity.ch in a set along with a 8ml Top Secrets Bi-Phase Eye Make-Up Remover + a 5ml Top Secrets Instant Moisture Glow —> here
  • the whole set is only CHF 35.75 CHF!
(usually the mascara alone is CHF 49.90)

If you suffer from really sensitive eyes that tend to water easily the next mascara is the perfect one for you. It is incredible and won’t budge even though it’s not a waterproof mascara!

Guerlain MaxiLash So Volume – holds up like no other

Another packaging that looks like a gem. It is black and gold while the gold part can even be used as a little mirror.

The rubber brush is rather long but really slim which makes it easy to get those baby lashes covered in mascara. The brush is also quite flexible making it really adjustable. Similar to the Chanel mascara the product is quite runny and the brush is quite packed with product.

What Guerlain promises:

A charming trump card, an irresistible weapon of seduction, Cils d’Enfer So Volume intensifies and enhances the eyes. Sophisticated variation of the mascara phenomenon, it delivers incredible instant volume, of a deep black. From the first sweep of the brush, the gentle, creamy and elastic formula creates significantly thicker lashes. Infused with a conditioning action to protect the lashes, it is enriched with adhesive oils to prevent running or smudging and ultra-glossy oils for an intense black. Its fine elastomer brush weaves in to easily catch and precisely coat lashes one by one – even the shortest and those at the very corners of the eye – to offer sensational curve. Lashes are coated and sculpted to perfection, with no risk of excess. Stunning captivating volume, magnetic black.

Let’s see how it performs on my lashes.

The MaxiLash can’t quite create the same amount of volume as the Chanel mascara does but it definitely adds lots of volume and separates the lashes nicely. The strength of this mascara is definitely adding length and that it just won’t budge!

Length & Curl

The MaxiLash Mascara adds (as the name suggests) maximum length. Also with this mascara my lashes almost reach my eyebrows. Furthermore I really enjoy the deep black color it coats my lashes with.

The MaxiLash is part of the few mascaras that can create an amazing curl which actually lasts through the whole day.

What I especially love about this mascara is the scent it has to it – it smells heavenly. I’m actually really bad a describing scents which is why I let Guerlain do the job for me:

Maxi Lash So Volume is delicately scented with a fragrance with floral notes. The first peach note blended with an accord of vegetal notes is fresh and sparkling. The rose, raspberry and jasmine heart is enriched with a powdery base of balsamic, benzoin and white musk.

Earlier I mentioned that I recommend this mascara to those who suffer from sensitive, runny eyes. Perfumed mascaras usually aren’t the right choice in that case which is why I was pretty sceptical at first. But I was proven wrong. I had no problems with this mascara whatsoever and it lasted the whole day without budging.

I always tend to use this mascara when I know that I will be out and about the whole day. I can always count on it!

The only drawback is obviously that i takes a little more effort to take it off. But I can definitely look past that.

  • available on Parfumcity.ch in 01 Noir —> here

I can totally recommend all of these mascaras from the bottom of my heart depending on what factor is most important to you.
